Rookie Division (A)

The Rookie Division (also known as Single-A) is an introductory level of baseball designed to bridge the gap between Tee Ball and the more competitive Farm and Minor divisions. This division focuses on teaching the fundamental skills of the game in a supportive and instructional environment.

Division Overview

  • Primary Focus: Fundamentals of hitting, fielding, and base running.
  • Format: Typically utilizes a Coach-Pitch format to ensure more action and consistent hitting opportunities for all players.
  • Age Group: Generally serves players ages 5-7, depending on their "League Age" and prior experience.
  • Goal: To build a solid foundation for becoming a successful ballplayer while fostering a love for the game.

Rules

The Rookie division transitions players toward standard baseball while maintaining an instructional focus.

  • Pitching: This is a Coach-Pitch division. An offensive coach pitches to their own team, typically from within a 10-foot circle around the mound.
  • Batting: Players are given a set number of pitches (often 5 or 6) to put the ball in play. Strikeouts may be recorded if the player fails to hit after the allotted pitches.
  • Base Running: Stealing and leading off are not permitted. Runners generally do not advance on overthrows to first or third base to encourage defensive attempts.
  • Scoring: Game scores and standings are typically not recorded to keep the focus on player development.
